Error 0x00000709 when adding shared printer

After getting fast fibre to the house, new router etc. I had a go at connecting a shared printer again. Same error message as before.

Can somebody explain to me why MS cannot fix this?

In any other business if a fault is highlighted a number of times the manufacturer would put out a fix?

I appreciate all the assistance the community give but why is it down to you guys or am I missing something.

I have no programming skills, I purchase a product and expect it to work.

In this case it worked for years until something happened last year.

Many thanks for the response. I do not have a Devices folder under Control Panel so was unable to proceed further.

    Regards

If you don't have the "Devices" folder under the "Control Panel" key, it's possible that the key might be located elsewhere in the registry. Here's what you can try:

Search for the "Devices" key in the Registry Editor by pressing "Ctrl + F" and typing "Devices" in the search box.

    Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Look for the "Device" key under the "Windows" key and see if you can find any relevant information that can help resolve the issue.

If you still can't find the "Devices" key, it's possible that your registry may have been damaged or altered, and you may need to consult with a technical expert for further assistance.

If the error appeared after updating to Windows 11 22H2, read on.

It's a known issue in Windows 11 22H2. This error occurs because the default connection method has changed in 22H2. Altering a setting in the Group Policy Editor resolves the issue.

    Please check out the following:

Thomas Førde on Twitter: "Printer issue finally resolved. A brand new printer policy in Win11 22H2 is the culprit.

    https://twitter.com/thomas_forde/status/1575096625470611458

Fix: Printer Error 0x00000bc4 or 0x00000709 in Windows 11 22H2:

    https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/printer-error-0x00000bc4-0x00000709-windows-11-22h2/

For Windows 11 Home Edition, try the registry edit (equivalent to the Group Policy setting) mentioned on the above page:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers\RPC]

There are 2 values that can be configured:

    RpcUseNamedPipeProtocol REG_DWORD

    0: RpcOverTcp (default)

    1: RpcOverNamedPipes

Set "RpcUseNamedPipeProtocol" to 1 and reboot the computer.

Also, see Eko Suprianto's post here for the additional settings if your Windows 11 22H2 is acting as the host (i.e., print server)

Hi, I hope you are well.

(error 0x00000709), This occurs if there is already a default printer set and configured or Windows does not want to configure the new printer at all.

Press Win + R button combination to launch the Run utility, type in regedit and hit Enter.

Once Registry Editor opens, navigate to the following key location

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Under the Windows folder, double-click on the file named Device on the right-side pane.

Add the name of your printer inside the Value Data

The error message "0x00000709" that you are encountering when adding a shared printer is related to a registry issue. This error can be caused by a conflict in the registry values that control the printer redirection feature in Windows. To fix this issue, you can try the following steps:

Press Windows + R key to open the Run box.

Type "regedit" in the Run box and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

    Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Devices

Right-click on the "Devices" key and select "Export".

Save the exported key to your desktop.

    Delete the "Devices" key.

Right-click on the "Control Panel" key and select "Import".

Select the exported key that you saved to your desktop.

Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.

Try adding the shared printer again and see if it resolves the error. If this does not work, you may need to consult with a technical expert to resolve the issue.
