When File Explorer is open I'm seeing checkboxes and I'm unable to turn checkbox usage off.
Checkboxes stay even if I toggle the item check boxes setting in the show view as noted below.

We re-test your situation in different operating system and got the result:
If we don't plug a keyboard, the checkbox will appear for users to operate.
When plugging a keyboard, the checkbox will disappear and you can open it in the View option.
Could you please tell me what brand is your computer and try to plug in a keyboard to see the issue.

It's a laptop with keyboard that you can bend backwards into a tablet.
I use it only in laptop mode.

Yes, if that is a convertible, you cannot disable checkboxes. Not sure if it is a bug or by design.
