Wireless mouse issue

While the cursor is fast and accurate, and the Device Manager assures me that "The device is working properly," the scroll wheel has become very erratic. It moves up or down very little, and then reverses direction when rolled in the same direction. It won't go up or down more than a few lines of text.

I might add that the batteries, which normally last three months, are only six weeks old.

    Dear Grandpa Jim,

I'm glad to see you in Microsoft Community.

May I ask what program did this happen to you? Is it a specific program, or all programs?

I believe changing the number of lines the mouse scrolls will solve your problem.

    • Press and hold Win + I at the same time -> Device -> Mouse -> Set Scroll Lines -> Set the number of lines you want to scroll

If you want to scroll one screen at a time, click "Scroll the mouse wheel to scroll" -> “one screen at a time” option

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best regards,

I use the scroll wheel most often when reading Word or Notepad docs.

I tried setting the Number of lines to scroll to 5 and then 10.

Sometimes it goes down and sometimes it goes up, and sometimes it doesn't respond at all.

I just had the same problem with a crossword puzzle page. It doesn't matter whether I push the wheel forward or backward. The screen sometimes moves up and sometimes down.

As to how many lines to scroll, does that depend on how many "clicks" you hear when moving the wheel?

    Dear Grandpa Jim,

Nice to see you again on  Microsoft Community.

Have you tried changing other mice? Does the same thing happen with other mice?

Because there are many reasons for the bluetooth mouse wheel problem, and it is complicated, I will give you several solutions, you will try them one by one, thank you for your patience and cooperation.

    1. Physically clean the mouse

If there is dust on the wheel, it will not connect properly with the IC inside the mouse. This is the most common cause of mouse wheel failure. In this case, physically cleaning the mouse can solve the problem. Be careful not to damage the mouse when cleaning it.

    1. Disconnect bluetooth mouse and reconnect

Press Win + i at the same time -> devices -> Bluetooth and other devices -> select your Bluetooth mouse, click, delete the device -> re-pair according to the method of connecting your mouse to the computer

    1. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter

Start -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Troubleshooting -> Additional Troubleshooting -> Swipe down to find Bluetooth -> Click on "Troubleshoot"

    1. Update the Bluetooth mouse driver

Right-click the Start icon, select Device Manager -> Bluetooth and other pointing devices -> Right-click your mouse -> Update devices -> Automatically search for drivers

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best regards,

I don't have any other mouse.

Settings / Bluetooth and other devices is OFF

There is no Bluetooth mouse driver option in Device Manager.

I will try cleaning, though I'm not sure how to do it.

    Thanks.

    Dear Grandpa Jim,

I'm glad to see you again in Microsoft Community.

Does your device have no "Mouse and other pointing devices" option?

For your convenience, please try again according to the picture.

     Right click "Start" button ->

To physically clean the mouse, you can use a brush or cotton swab to gently wipe the middle part of the scroll wheel.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best regards,
