Hey Team,

Do we know when Microsoft plans to phase out basic authentication for SMTP mail? I couldn't find a specific date or month online. Could you please let me know?

Also, will I be able to use an App password after the deprecation, or is there another alternative I should consider? I appreciate your help with this.

Thanks!

Hi @Mani Bharathi

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, we understand that you have considered the Microsoft's plan to phase out Basic Authentication for SMTP mail. We are glad to assist you this part.

As my research, Microsoft has officially announced the timeline for phasing out Basic Authentication for SMTP AUTH:

March 1, 2026: Initiation of the phased deactivation of Basic Auth for SMTP AUTH.

April 30, 2026: Completion of the deactivation process. Basic Auth will be fully disabled for SMTP AUTH.

Regarding App Passwords: Since they rely on Basic Authentication, which is being retired, SMTP AUTH using App Passwords will no longer function after the shutdown.

Here are some alternative methods you can consider:

Please correct me if I misunderstand your request.
