Today, I installed Firefox. In this browser, it seems to be working.
login using passwordless authentication, results in error "Check your Authenticator app" "That password is incorrect for your Microsoft account"
Both me and a colleague on different devices with different accounts are experiencing the same error.
We try to log on to Microsoft Outlook (with personal accounts with passwordless enabled) we enter the email address and click next.
We get the number displayed on screen and select the same number on our Microsoft Authenticator push notification.
the goes through and the screen updated to a message showing:
"Check your Authenticator app
That password is incorrect for your Microsoft account"
We are both able to login with different method and use username and password.
Is Microsoft Authenticator broken some how ?

2025-07-17T11:40:31.38+00:00 I'm getting the same error message. If click "Other ways to sign in" then use the "App" from that link it works fine. I can also login with my normal password without issues.

2025-07-17T18:03:08.09+00:00 I have the same error. On two email accounts, I could set a password and gain access, but on a third email account, a premium one, I can't get a code on my phone and set a password, because Microsoft won't send the code, so I can't get access to the account at all. The worst is that there is no email or even live chat to explain this and regain access to the account. Like being hacked, but the hacker is the service provider.

2025-07-17T19:31:00.19+00:00 This has to be something new they introduced causing this. I got same issue on my end, and seems this is popping up July 17th of 2025.

2025-07-17T19:48:16.9233333+00:00 Same for me, 17/07/25. Been happening all day trying to access account.live.com.
I use Opera on MacOS. But switched to Safari and it works, so may be a browser issue?

2025-07-18T03:07:41.3233333+00:00 I used a paid account, and it's annoying since yesterday, sms passcode does not work, even when I reset my password, and try to login again, it asks for second factor authentication and stuck there

2025-07-18T18:12:03.8866667+00:00 Same issue here, started happening as of yesterday, July 17th. Observed similar behavior to other posters here. When trying to log in with Authenticator App, the initial try results in "That password is incorrect for your Microsoft Account". Once I click on "Other ways to sign in" and use the Microsoft Authenticator again, it works without any issues. I'm assuming something is broken on Microsofts end.

2025-07-19T04:03:38.9133333+00:00 Just wanted to comment as well. This started happening to me too. Even clicking the "Other ways to sign in" link results in the same error message. Basically I just have to keep asking for codes until one finally works. Hopefully this gets fixed soon as their chat support was completely unhelpful. I'm worried none of the codes will work at some point.

2025-07-19T08:04:47.45+00:00 The exact same thing is happening with me when I try to approve login from my mobile app. However, the unfortunate thing is that if I switch to other ways to sign in and use password, then If I am lucky, I get the error of "Too many attempts" and I can login by repeatedly refreshing the page. If unlucky, it gives the error to change device or network or use VPN which fails the login.
I am pretty sure that Microsoft is becomming more and more unprofessional and this sudden influx of errors after errors is a result of them switching to AI programming and coding. They now straight forward lack the capability to resolve issues and I have seriously started reconsidering to switch my digital footprint from hotmail to gmail.

2025-07-19T08:32:06.5666667+00:00 TLDR; Login to Outlook PC app worked for me, nothing else.
I get the same message when i try to log in with authenticator without password, but i cannot login with password either, it says it is incorret, but it is correct. This happens in android outlook app, Chrome and Vivaldi browsers on PC and Android. I could however login Outlook app on PC though, and for some reason i could suddenly login in browser using password or authenticator, or Windows hello, which for some reason had to be activated in order to login to Outlook app. Browser on my phone however still does not work.

2025-07-19T11:50:15.3+00:00 I have the same issue. Now, I am unable to get codes sent via Outlook. That option has been removed from my account. I cannot add it back. To get codes getting pushed, I have to use Microsoft Authenticator App. Anyone else has this issue?

2025-07-19T12:20:13.4733333+00:00 Another person with the same problem here. I jumped through many hoops, but nothing seemed to be working. For some reason, I managed to reach MS account management through Edge, since I use my MS account for syncing, and there I created a passkey, which doesn't need the auth app for working, and that is what I've been using for logging in since. I know this is a not solution, but has been working for me as a workaround.

2025-07-21T07:05:36.9466667+00:00 I have the same problem ..., I can't connect to my account using outlook app (microsoft 365) or edge. With firefox seems to work. Edit :
- I used Firefox to connect my accounts and create a passkey on my smartphone.
- Now i can connect to the accounts using the passkey and not the authenticator, working on edge & Microsoft app.
Hope this major bug will be fixed soon ...

2025-07-22T16:47:08.0233333+00:00 I'm still having this issue on day five. Does anyone else have an update about this problem? Five days for this severe of an issue seems excessive.

2025-07-22T21:57:07.1933333+00:00 Please excuse my Google Translate English. I don't know why, but when you try to log in with Firefox on both PC and mobile, the app works correctly by selecting the two identical digits. It hasn't worked on Chrome for days. I haven't tried other browsers, but for now, you can access your accounts with Firefox.

2025-07-23T10:00:28.5733333+00:00 I also encountered the same issue. Around July 17, 2025, my Microsoft Authenticator stopped working properly. This significantly reduces the security of my Microsoft account. Please have the Microsoft account team fix this problem as soon as possible. Currently, I can only log in with my password because the authenticator is not functioning.

2025-07-25T14:18:34.9566667+00:00 I am STILL having this same issue a week later. It seems Microsoft is very slow to fix these issues, especially for passwordless accounts.

2025-07-28T04:18:03.83+00:00 I was able to login after many attempts, the last was from phone number code, I used "I cannot use aythenticator now", then use phone number to get a code for some reason it works by itself.
in my case I use Outlook 2019 version.

2025-07-23T17:06:05.95+00:00 It definitely seems better but it is not fixed. Using an incognito window in Firefox I was able to login six times in a row without any issue. Using an incognito window in Chrome did not have the same results. It logged me in fine the verify first time I tried. After logging out and trying again it took another three attempts before finally accepting the code it sent.

2025-07-30T07:11:55.64+00:00 I had the same problem on Edge on a newly set-up Mac. Puzzled by the fact that it would work on other computers and also work like a charm in In-Private tabs. Deleted "Cookies and other website data", "temporary pictures and files", "Auto-fill forms" and "website permissions" from my browser data and presto - works as if there had never been a problem.
