I cannot rename folders in my Teams, and when I manage to do it, they are only renamed in the Teams Channel and not in SharePoint. Help!

Hello,

I have been struggling to rename folders I have on SharePoint. When I try edit the name on SharePoint, it tells me to edit it in the Teams Channel.

When I go on Teams, it says the error in the image below.

I tried several times and at one point when I kept clicking "Try Again", it eventually renamed the folders on the Channel but not on SharePoint.

And now when I try modify anything, it keeps giving this error.

I tried everything, it has now been a month of me renaming or checking the SP site. Nothing changed. I tried variations, old Teams, new Teams, Teams in browser (both new and old), nothing really works.

I use Teams for Business, so I do not have any admin privileges. I am the site Owner as well, so have all permissions to do this.

If anyone can assist, I will be eternally grateful!

Thanks

    Hi Revonda,

    Thanks for posting back.

I suggest you temporarily set "Allow management of content types" to Yes and check the existing content types in the library. If there are multiple content types, please temporarily set another content type as default and visible, and then check again.

If you still can't rename the folder, I am afraid I don't have any ideas on this situation. If you have any results from the support team, please kindly share them with us. This may help other members who are experiencing the same problem.

    Appreciate your understanding and patience.

    Sincerely,

    Hi George,

Thank you again for getting back to me.

I looked at every point you suggested and attempted to execute them all. I have attached screenshots,

#1 The Checkout Setting was already set to No.

#2 The Indexed Columns did not contain the Versions Column.

#3 The only Content Types I could find are in the Advanced Settings of the Library, I captured what it looks like.

Are these steps all correct? The only one I am doubtful on is the Content Types.

Let me know what you think!

If these are not useful, then I will indeed speak to my IT department and raise a support ticket.

My IT team is not the best in terms of speed so I was hoping to firstly figure out something of my own.

    Thanks for your time again!!

    Hi Revonda,

Thanks for posting back and sorry for my late reply.

I go through your post carefully. Regarding the first error message, one member mentioned that this can be caused by the Check In/Out function. So, I suggest you check the "Require Check Out" setting in the Library settings. Go to the library in SharePoint, Settings, More Library settings, and Versioning Settings. Ensure that "Require Check Out" is set to No. If not, please change it to No, then check again.

Regarding the second error message, I suggest you check the following points.

    1. Please ensure that the Version column is not configured as an Indexed Column.

Go to the library in SharePoint, Settings, More library settings, under the Columns section, and click "Indexed columns". Ensure that the Version column is not in the list. If it is in the list, please click it and then delete it.

    1. Based on this article, the error message can be caused by a problematic column being included in the content type. Please go to Library settings and check if you can see a "Content Types" section and see multiple content types. If you can see multiple content types, please set another content type as default and make other content types invisible by clicking "Change new button order and default content type". After that, please check if the issue still occurs.

If the above suggestions don't help, to troubleshoot the problem further, I suggest you contact your admin or IT department to raise a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center> Support> New service request. That support team there will have the correct channel and resources to help you investigate more and find what exactly reason has caused this problem.

Sorry for the inconvenience that happened to you. Appreciate your understanding and patience.

    Sincerely,

    George | Microsoft Community Moderator

    Hello George,

Thank you for getting back to me. The folder I am trying to rename has been created by a user. In reality, on SharePoint I cannot see the Rename option, rather, when I right click and select Details, it shows me Properties on the right hand side, and it gives me an option to "Edit all". There I can rename, however it gives me the error notification to rename the folder on the Teams Channel. Please see Screenshot below:

    Image

The folders I am renaming are all in the "Documents" section on the SharePoint site, and I normally can only rename the subfolders within these folders.

In terms of the thread you just sent, I look at all the points, I have done all of it apart from the Microsoft Admin Centre part as my IT team only has access to that section. But it renamed some folders and left out some, so it seems more like an error rather than a permission issue.

The reason I would not want to create a new renamed folder, and then transfer all the files over is because the folder has many many files and is being constantly used by the team. Moreover, I have been also encountering issues when moving files where it says that the URL is invalid, so I would not want to risk moving some bits for some to then be left behind because of this error too.

    Please see example below:

Apologies, our system seems to be very problematic.

    Thanks

    Hi Revonda,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

According to your description, I would like to know which folder you were renaming. Is it a folder created by users or the default folder, such as the "General" folder?

If it is a folder created by users, since you are the site owner, and I assume that you can see the "Rename" option when selecting the folder, then this is abnormal. As far as I know, no built-in SharePoint settings can cause this situation. To troubleshoot it further, I would like to collect more information.

    1. For "When I try edit the name on SharePoint, it tells me to edit it in the Teams Channel.", I wonder if you can reproduce this message. If so, please take a full screenshot including it, and click "Insert Image" to upload the screenshot.

    1. I wonder if you can create a new folder and rename it in this SharePoint site's library.

Based on the error message "We ran into a problem editing your channel", I suggest you check the points in Rn Hou-MSFT's reply in this thread. Check if they help.

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    George | Microsoft Community Moderator
