Excel Solver on Mac

Hi,

I am having a strange problem when using Excel (2016) Solver on my Mac.

When Solver is invoked, I was not able to enter data (manually or via copy/paste) into the "Value of" cell, thus not being able to set the objective for my analysis. I was still able to specify the cell for which I wanted to set the "Value of" and the cells to be changed.

Could you please inform how I can fix this problem.

Thanks,

Sophie

    Hi Sophie,

Do you mean that you are unable to type data into the cell of that you set as Objective?

For example, you set the value in B8 as objective, but you can't enter data into cell B8 when the Solver is opened.

If so, I'd like to explain that we need to close the Solver parameters if we want to enter data into the cell that we set as objective.

Or do you mean that you are unable to enter data into the box next to "Value of" when it is selected?

If so, please try disabling Solver add-in, then restart you Excel and enable it to check the outcome.

If you cannot type data into the box next to "value of" after you do this, I would like to confirm some information to better understand your situation:

    1. Does this happen to one specific file or all file? Please try creating a new workbook and check whether you can enter data into the box next to "Value of".
    2. Can you type data if you select Max and Min?
    3. A screenshot of your table including the Solver Parameters page to let us see the symptom.
    4. Does this happen previously?
    5. Your Excel version from Excel menu>About Excel.

For your reference: Example of a Solver evaluation.

    Regards,

    Joanne

    1. It happens on all files. Also, when I try to add a constraint, I can’t input anything in

    the constraint section

    1. When I click Max or Min, the box next to “value of” gets disabled. Therefore, I can’t

    input anything.

    3.

    1. I haven’t used solver before, so I wouldn’t know.
    2. I am using Excel version 15.38 (170822)

In fact,  I was unable to enter any data (even by copying and paste) into the box next to "Value of" when the "Value of" radio button was selected?

Similarly, I was unable to enter a constraint in the constraint section.

I have no trouble reproducing the problem you described.

Please go to the Excel menu and choose About Excel and reply with the version you have. The current version is 15.37. I tested in version 15.39 in Yosemite version 10.10.5

    This is clearly a bug.

Please send a report directly to Microsoft using the Smile button in Excel. I will do the same.

Joanne, please test in a current version of Excel. You will find there is a problem that must be addressed.
