Spell Check/Thesaurus randomly not working

Client was able to switch between the spell check and thesaurus features of Word in a document, but suddenly can't use spell check, cannot use the thesaurus within same document or vis versa. either must completely close Word and open the document again, or if I open a new document, can only use whichever proofing feature chooses first. For example, in a new document if I start with spell check I cannot use the thesaurus, and if I start with the thesaurus, I cannot use the spell check.

I have completely uninstalled Office with Microsoft’s uninstall tool and reinstalled and still having the same problem. Have reimaged the computer and still same issue keeps returning. Random not occurring on all document but once it starts, need to restart Word or restart computer to get it working again.

Office Current Version: (2008) 16.0.13127.21668
Office Update Channel: Semi-Annual enterprise
Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise
OS: Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit 10.0 (18363)

I can't update office/windows versions is controlled by the client when we do updates.

    @Nadine C

Is there any error message when Splling & Grammar and Thesaurus do not work?
In addition, do these two functions work properly on those documents encountered this issue before after restarting Word?

Currently I suggest you hold down Ctrl key and then double-click the icon for Microsoft Word, run Word in safe mode and then open the doucments to check this issue. As this issue occurs randomly, it may take some time to test.

    • If this issue still exist in safe mode of Word, I suggest you rename the Normal template (Normal.dotm).
Please close all the files of Office and go to File explorer > View in Show/hide group > check the box of "Hidden Items".
Go to C:\Users\<user name >\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates, then find the Normal.dotm and rename it. This file will be automatically generated when reopen Word.
    • If these two features work smoothly in safe mode, it is recommended to run Word back to normal mode and disable all add-ins temporarily to check this issue.

If the steps above do not work, I suggest you close Word app, located to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0, then rename the folder that is named 1.0, the new name could be old1.0.
Strat Word and check this issue.

Any updates you may post back.

    Registry change no difference
    Safe mode no difference
    new normal.dotm no difference

Forgot to mention when I log on to device as administrator it does the same thing, that's why I reimaged it. Complete wipe and reinstall of everything.
