How to fix error code 50126 when adding personal account to Outlook Windows application?

I cannot add a personal account (with personal domain) to local Outlook Windows application.

This is a Microsoft365 Family subscription and the domain is hosted at Godaddy.

When I use an outlook.com alias for the same account, Outlook says the account is added, but it's not.

Does Outlook think my personal account is a Work or School account? Error code 50126 seems ADFS related which I am not using.

I already deleted all Windows Account cached credentials related to this account in Credential Manager.

Has somebody seen this behaviour before and have a solution for this?

Note: I can login into all Microsoft web services.

Thanks in advance,

Stefan.

What is the Autodiscover record for your account? It should point to autodiscover.outlook.com

go to mxtoolbox.com - enter autodiscover.customdomain.com in the box and choose CNAME from the dropdown.

    Autodiscover settings are correct:

I think I know what the problem is.

When I login into https://outlook.office.com/mail using my firstname.lastname@mydomain "work" account I get following error:

    Image

This seems logical because there is no license for this "work" account. The personal account is linked (and thereby licensed) to my Microsoft365 Family subscription. The "work" account is not.

admin.microsoft.com tells me that I am the only user in my domain:

Can I safely remove the domain here, without affecting existing "mydoman" accounts and aliases? I certainly do not want Microsoft to remove any mailbox.

The work and personal accounts are in the same domain?

admin.microsoft.com is on the business side and has nothing to do with the domain you use in outlook.com. You can safely remove your address there if you are not using any services - your account there won't be deleted but you'll log in using a onmicrosoft.com address.

I have removed my email address (@mydomain) from admin.microsoft.com.

Now I get error "The username might be incorrect" when adding a Outlook.com account from Windows Outlook, which seems logical because I just removed that "work" email address.

As soon as each family member has an outlook.com login enabled email alias, I will delete "mydomain" from admin.microsoft.com. Hoping that action does not affect any related mydomain alias on the "personal" side.

The business side has no bearing on the consumer side.

That would only be logical if you are trying to sign in using a work account.

Is the address listed as a work or school account in Windows settings > accounts -look under work or school.

Is it listed under the key -HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities\ (on the right side) .If the key on the left has live in the name, its the Microsoft account. Business accounts will have adal at the end. If so, delete the key on the left.
