Yes! The only thing software developers seem to be good at is "fixing" things that aren't broken. The newest version creates extra work and its exasperating.

Yes, still exactly the same July 2025. Whilst some people have the option to change the setting in the reading pane, it's clear that most of us that are unhappy do not have any way to change the current action. If I try to use the reading pane/bottom on, then I get no choice to go back to the message list as the next action. So not a good option for me. This is extremely annoying. My employer has rolled out this version across the organisation, due to the Windows 10 moving to legacy, and so a required move to Win 11. Typical MS change. Do not provide a new option/alternative; just change one of the standard actions that has been in use forever - so that it doesn't work anymore. And here we are, still - forced to use this **** product.

MS - where is this bug on your priority list. When can we expect a fix to be delivered?

    Hello Abhay,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community. I am a Microsoft user like you, I hope you are doing well.

To disable a single click to open email in New Outlook, you must change the reading pane settings in your Outlook options. Here are the steps you can follow:

    • Sign in to your Outlook account using your email address and password.

    • At the top of the page, select Settings and choose View all Outlook settings.

    • In the Settings pan, go to Layout and select the Reading pane under Maile.

    • Under Mark as read, uncheck the option Single click to open items.

    • Click Save to apply the changes.

I hope this helps you disable a single click to open the email in New Outlook.

I have this same problem.... Outlook 365 is opening messages with a single click, and I do not want that.

I've already turned off the toggle for New Outlook to revert, but the single click open is still happening.

I tried following your instructions and they aren't correct.

In my case to find anything close to what you said, I've opened SETTINGS - MAIL - MESSAGE HANDLING - there is a MARK AS READ section but it doesn't have any settings for opening with single click.

How do we disable this and go back to double click required to open?
