Problem when inserting table using Excel spreadsheet option

It seems that there is a serious issue with the embedding of excel in Word. 

1.      Open Word

2.      Select Insert Ribbon and select the arrow next to table

3.      Select the option Excel spreadsheet

4.      Word now embeds an excel sheet into your document.

5.      Enter values into the spreadsheet

6.      Click outside the spreadsheet and the spreadsheet will be displayed as a table.

7.      Save the document and close word

8.      Open word again and open the document saved in point 7.

9.      Double click on the table to be able to open as an excel sheet.

You get a error saying :

The program used to create this object is Excel. That program is not installed on your computer. to edit this object, you must install a program that can open the object.

i did checked this linkhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/960806 but i dont have the said plug-in installed.

I'm at my wits end. I'm having the same problems with an embedded Excel spreadsheet. However, when I'm opening the Word document (Word 2010 on Windows 7 machine), Excel is not running and there are NO add-ins enabled in Excel to boot. I've followed the exact same steps above, however, at Step 5 there is nothing to disable so I'm at a loss as to why this is happening.

I have three different users with this issue - not to mention myself at this point. Two on Office 2010 and one on Office 2007.

Converting the Excel object to Binary is not working either.

I had the same issue, running Windows 7 with Office 2007, all updates installed.  The problem would only occur if Excel was already running when I tried to edit the embedded spreadsheet.  My problem was apparently caused by an Excel COM add-in; after I disabled the add-in, the problem went away;  as a sanity check I re-enabled the add-in and the problem came back again.  This was my problem:

1. Create a new Word document, embed an Excel spreadsheet, add a few values, click outside the spreadsheet, save the document, close Word.
2. Make sure Excel is not running.
3. Open the same Word document again.  Double click on the embedded spreadsheet.  You should be able to edit cells.  Close Word.
4. Start Excel. 
5. Open the same Word document again.  Double click on the embedded spreadsheet.  This time you will get the error "The program used to create this object is Excel. That program is not installed on your computer. to edit this object, you must install a program that can open the object."
6. From Excel, disable the COM add-in (Excel Options, Add-Ins, COM Add-ins, Go, deselect the add-in, OK).
7. Open the same Word document again.  Double click on the embedded spreadsheet.  You should once again be able to edit cells.

In my case, the add-in was Excellent Analytics version 1.0.0.71.  I don't know whether the problem is with Excel or the add-in.  Just reporting the facts!

This problem seems to be fairly widespread, and has been happening in older versions of Windows and Office.  Perhaps someone can tell us what the add-in is doing to cause the problem??

Try the below mentioned steps and check it it helps.

1. Right-click on the Excel object
2. Click Worksheet Object -> Convert...
3. Choose Microsoft Office Excel Binary Worksheet
4. Click OK and try opening the excel sheet.

Excel does appear as an option in "Open With" menu. But the problem still remains :(

I cannot replicate the problem here.

In Windows Explorer, if you right click on an Excel spreadsheet and then select Open with, does Excel appear as the program to be used to open such files?
