Hello -

I store my onenote notebooks on my M: drive (local path)...

I notice that I have a folder called: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote\12.0

in which I have 1.5 GB of audio files.

Can I delete these without affecting my onenote notebooks?

Thanks...

John

No, do NOT delete these files.  This is the cached copy of the files that are embedded in your notebook.  If you delete them, you will almost certainly corrupt your notebooks and embedded files they hold.

If you want to clean out this folder, go to OneNote and delete the embedded audio files from the page there.

I've got a similar question... how can I remove the cached files?

I guess I don't understand, if the audio is saved with the notebooks, and backing up the notebooks on M is sufficient, why would removing the cached files be a problem?  Is there any way to remove them?

    Hi John -

How can I clear the cached files?  I just don't need 2 GB of space taken up by audio files I haven't accessed in 2 years.

    Hi Joe,

    1. Yes, they are stored in the same location as the notebook as well as in the cache.  If you back up the M drive (assuming that is where the notebook is), then they will get backed up as well.

    2.  Yes, but File | Backup also will have them backed up for a short period of time.  That time varies with how often the notebook gets edited.

I'll also point out you can change where the onenote backups are kept in tools \ options \ save and backup.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi John --

    Thanks for the quick reply...

Let me ask a couple of other questions based on your response.

    1. Are the audio files stored in the M drive as well?  If I am making a backup of the M drive, is that enough, or do I need to backup this folder as well?
    2. If I delete the embedded audio files from within onenote, then I am deleteing them for good, right?

I was just trying to figure out why oenote stores two copies of the audio files...

    Thanks :)
