Unspecified error when trying to activate microsoft office 2010

My microsoft word 2010 professsional plus just decided to no longer verify the product license. I spoke to someone using the online chat feature who told me to uninstall and reinstall. I did this and it won't let me activate my product by internet or phone. If I try to activate by internet it says that there is an unspecified error please try again later. If I try by phone I don't get the ID needed to put in to the automated system. I then rang the number given to me by the online chat guy for tech support. They say I either have to get an answer on here or pay £46 for someone to help me! I have already paid for the product and it has been installed on this computer for 6 months! I am based in the UK.

Any help would be most appreciated.

 Kate

If it was previously activated, you should be able to get the "product ID" from the File > Help pane. It is at the bottom of the column of info on the far right side of the pane.

Since you are having internet activation problems, phone activation is your only resort.

Here are some other ways of starting the phone activation process:

Phone Activation Process in Photos Win XP-7 Office 2003-2010

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929

NOTE: you can find links to the specific activation instruction for Office or Windows in hyperlinks at the bottom of the article

Do a phone activation. Do not enter anything, wait a LONT time, until the phone system offers you the option to talk to a live “service” rep. Explain the problem to them. You are transferring the installation from a “dead” computer, or you are getting an invalid product key and would like to know the exact reason

Microsoft Activation Centers Worldwide Telephone Numbers

http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/existing-customers/activation-centers.aspx

Manually invoke Activation applet to get phone number

·         Click Start, or invoke Run dialog using <WIN > +< R>

·         in the Run Box type slui.exe 4   (you need to include the “4” to get to the right spot)

·         Select the appropriate location for an activation centre near you and call them. Except on weekends.

Activation and Registration info, phone numbers and links

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851

·         Telephone activation might take longer than activation through the Internet. You should be at your computer when you call, and you should have your software Product Key available.

1.     In the Activation Wizard, select the country/region where you reside and where you plan to use the product .

The wizard provides one or more telephone numbers appropriate for your selection. Use the number provided on your Activation Wizard screen to call the Microsoft Activation Center.

2.     Call the Activation Center .

The customer service representative asks you for your installation ID (displayed on your screen) and other relevant information. After your installation ID is verified, you receive a confirmation ID.

3.     In the Activation Wizard, type the confirmation ID in the spaces provided at the bottom of the screen, and then press ENTER .

Notes

·         Telephone activation is not available for Trial and Subscription versions.

Use Activation Wizard to get the “Installation ID” required by Phone and Chat Help lines

do the activation method below:

·         Open Word application.

·         Click on the round Office button in the upper left corner of the screen.

·         Select "Word Options" at the bottom of the menu.

·         Select "Resources" from the left menu.

·         Click "Activate" on the right side

·         Select "I want to activate the software over the Internet" and click "Next". This will usually complete successfully and activate the software.

·         If you were unable to automatically activate over the Internet, you may select "I want to activate the software by telephone" and click "Next."

The Microsoft Activation Wizard will show you three steps:

Step 1:  Select your location

Step 2:  Installation ID (This will be required by the chat/phone support team from you for activation. Please provide it to them immediately)

Step 3:  Confirmation ID (This will be provided by the support to you that you need to enter from boxes A to H to proceed with the activation. You may click on Next after entering the ID to complete the activation.

What can you do if Office product activation is refused?

If phone activation fails you can ask the same person for help though most likely it’s a mix-up with the activation code.

If you don’t get an activation code, Microsoft staff should explain why authorization can’t be given. If they can’t, then ask to speak to a supervisor. Try to find out exactly what the problem is and ask about further appeals process.

Do you know under what program you got Office Pro Plus. It is not normally sold to the general public.

There are 2 ways for a company to buy Pro Plus for you. Since you are a student, one way is for them to get it through the "University" discount program.  MS would provide support for that.

The other way I can think of is through the "HUP", Home Use Program. But, on second thought, you are not an employee so you wouldn't qualify.

PS: MS online support "service" <heavy sarcasm> reps are notoriously lazy. They constantly tell people they don't qualify for support, or send them here help instead of doing their jobs.

Office Pro Plus is a volume licence and is only available to qualifying peoples. (Its not available retail)

Typically it can be obtained if you are a student (in the UK) from various student software suppliers and as a HUP (Home Use Program) supplied by your employer, eg NHS, in these circumstances you are provided the special phone numbers for support, or support is provided by that employers IT Dept

So if it was supplied by a Company that Company should provide support.

Was it preinstalled on the PC or were you supplied with the dvd or just the installation file?

Was the Key supplied with the dvd pkge, or was it emailed to you?

    Thanks for the replies!

When I open MS word the activation wizard opens. It has 2 options: 1. activate by internet and 2. activate by phone.

When I try to activate by internet it comes up with this error message "An unspecified error has occurred. Your request cannot be processed at this time. Please try again later. (0x8007000D)"

When I try to activate by phone I put in the UK as my country and then no installation ID comes up which I need to enter over the phone in order to get the confirmation ID.

I definitely did not buy from EBay! The reason they say I have to pay is something to do with the license? or so the guy on the phone said. I am a disabled student and a company was appointed to buy me all the computer equipment I needed and software, because the company bought the office pro plus they say am I not entitled to support.

    Hope this makes more sense!

Would that be your PC makers on-line support chat?

What exactly do you mean by 'wont let me activate'? what is the exact err msg?

Whilst MS may take your cc details they wont actually charge you if its a valid installation issue.

BTW Where did you obtain Pro Plus from, not Ebay I trust?
