When you put an application file like a PowerPoint presentation up on the web, it doesn't stream to the user.  Instead, their browser downloads a copy of the file to their temp folder and opens it from there.  If you want them to view the presentation *as* a PowerPoint file, you have to let them download it in one way or another.

You can apply a password to the presentation so that they can download, open and view it but not edit it.

You can convert it to images so that it's viewable by anyone who can view PPT files, but not editable in any real sense.

But think about what exactly you want to protect against vs what you want to show people.

Consider that anything you show me, I can probably screen-capture at a minimum, so the only real security is not showing it to me in the first place.

Cosigned.  Any news on this, Microsoft? Not trying to be snobby but my stuff gets ripped off a lot.  It'd be nice to make it a little more difficult.

I wish to do the same and have the same question.  I want to make it as difficult as possible for others to share or download my content.  I have a developer designing my website and was curious if there is a way he can disable the actual download ability within the api code or any other options?  Thank You!

    Hi KyleRyan,

Just wanted to know if this issue has been fixed. I want to embed the ppt web app on my website, but I dont want to provide download a copy or embed information. How do I do this?

Yes I understand - let me restate so it's clearer. I want to either embed or have a link on my website but I don't want users to have the ability to download or open the link in PowerPoint.  I essentially want to have a way to protect my content and not allow people to download by PPTX file, download a local copy, edit it, etc.

Is there a way to disable the "File" options and "Open in PowerPoint" after they access the link?
