Edit source data for charts

Question

Is it possible to edit the source data for charts in Excel for iPad and add category labels?

In Excel for Windows you can select data cells in a sheet to create a chart, and add category labels later. For example, if I have fiscal data for country X and Y from 1990 to 2014. In Windows I can select the data and create a chart, then manually label the first series as X, the second series as Y, and add 1990 to 2014 as the time dimension. 

In Excel for iPad, after I select the data and create a chart, I cannot create these labels.

Thanks for using Excel for the iPad. And thanks for your question.

In Excel for iPad you can edit the source data for your chart by directly editing the values in the cells in the spreadsheet just like on desktop versions of Excel. You can also change the source data range (e.g. adding a new series) by manipulating the colored highlight borders that appear in the spreadsheet when a chart is selected. But you cannot make changes to the category labels or the series names directly in the chart.

However, you should be able to get the chart you want by forming your source data with series names and category labels, then using the Recommended chart command on the Insert tab.

This only works if the chart is on the same sheet. I have data on one sheet and my charts on another and the only way I can modify the charts to use extra data is on the desktop app, which is annoying.
