Hi guys,

If two people have an excel document open via the Desktop sync/SharePoint tool and one of them recieves the 'This file is locked' bar and notify when available.

How long does that notification take to arrive and also, how does it arrive? Within Excel?

We've been waiting 5-10 minutes but aren't seeing any form of notification.

Many thanks,

CP

    Hi Chris,

Did the error go away? Do you need further assistance?

    Thanks,

    hi chris,

do these two users open the excel document in their local onedrive for business sync folder and then the second user got the error message like below?

    ![](http://fud.community.services.support.microsoft.com/Fud/FileDownloadHandler.ashx?fid=a377e2e1-1073-436d-bd27-5f2fbb138488)

if yes, i’d like to explain that it is a normal behavior. after the first user edit the document and click save, then the change will be updated to the server. once it is finished, the second user should open the document again, then he will get the following message:

    ![](http://fud.community.services.support.microsoft.com/Fud/FileDownloadHandler.ashx?fid=17a67bde-30ac-4ef1-8175-3b664cb0d07c)

click reopen document, and then the document will not be locked and he will be able to edit it again.

by the way, i would suggest you coauthor with each other online other than in local sync folder, which is the best practice and will not bring the error you described. for your reference: document collaboration and co-authoring and real-time co-authoring in the excel web app: why and how we did it.

    thanks,
