ActiveSync Device ID

Hi,

We were going through some reports and found 2 users with the same device ID. We are assuming that these 2 devices were wiped and re-assigned to a new user within the same company, however to confirm that we wanted to make sure as to what exactly is the device ID? Is it a random generated value by Exchange Online or is it the actual device ID on Android, Windows or iOS phones? We tried to validate the given device ID from Exchange and compare it with the actual Android device ID but it doesn't seem to be matching/correct.

Thanks and regards.

Hi JCarabott,

I test different IPhones and don’t get the same Device ID. I have done some researches as well and the Device ID should be different (unique). It is related to the mobiles, not the user mailbox.

Best Regards,

Erick

    Dear Erick,

Perfect. That's the information that I needed; which means that the phone was re-used by two different users as we were suspecting.

Thanks for all your help on this!

    Hi JCarabott,

To my knowledge, the Exchange ActiveSync Device ID is generated when an Exchange ActiveSync relationship is created.  As far as I know that Exchange ActiveSync "Device ID" has nothing to do with the DeviceUniqueId property of your device.

To look deeper into this issue, please provide the .csv file in the workspace mentioned in the private message. Meanwhile, we need to do some more research and consult the relevant team on it.

Thanks for your time and patience.

    Alex

    Dear Erick,

    1. I used the PowerShell script Get-MobileDeviceStatistics and exported the details as .csv. When comparing the values I noticed that 2 users had a common Device ID. The last successful sync time was different, and that's where we deducted that the mobile was "recycled" between multiple users inside the company. We also confirmed using Exchange Online under each user's devices. What we wanted to understand though is if the device ID is obtained from the device or generated from Exchange online since we noticed it is different from the actual device ID.
    2. I sent a reply to your message. Let me know if you need any additional information.

    Thanks in advance.
