Word for Mac 2016, embedded Powerpoint objects do not open

I've installed the Office for Mac 2016 package. I am consistently getting this error opening powerpoint embedded to Word document as an object:

"The program used to create this object is PowerPoint. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding.

To edit this object, install PowerPoint or ensure that any dialog boxes in PowerPoint are closed."

Powerpoint is most definitely installed and I'm able to use it just fine with normal files.
