excel error "object reference not set to an instance of an object"

Hello,

I am having trouble with excel 2016 in windows 10.

If excel is not open and I try to open a file, I get the error "object reference not set to an instance of an object".  Once I acknowledge the error message, the file opens just fine.  There is also a blank file opened at the same time.  Once excel is open I can open any other file without the error.

I can also open excel first, then open a file.

I have tried deleting the hidden personal file and rebuild the macros I use.  It works once, then the error returns next time I access excel.

Thanks for your help.

John
