get error "Fields nested too deeply"

I have a long document that uses a few DOCVARIABLES in headers/footers, some cross-references, a TOC, and Caption & Table numbering. Otherwise, not much in the way of fields. When I went to update all fields, I got  "Fields nested too deeply". What is this, and how can I be sure my fields are properly updating?

A quick Internet search took me to this MS article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/220250. It talks about mail merge and INCLUDETEXT scenarios, which I don't have (as far as I know).

Any ideas out there that can help me with this?

If you can not share the document, then all I can suggest is that you copy everything EXCEPT the final paragraph mark and paste it iñto à new document and if that does not overcome the problem, try copying and pasting first, one half of the document and then the other, to identify the location of the problem, and then repeat the process with smaller and smaller parts to isolate the problem.

    You should start a new thread in which you tell us:

    Version of Windows

    Version of Office

    Full text of the error message that appears

    What you were doing when the error occurred.

    Without that information, no one will be able to help you.
