Import Excel file into MS Project. Task mapping wizard not picking up all fields

Question

I figured out how to connect my Excel file to MS Project. However, when I map the fields to be included in the Project file, it does not show all the fields included in the Excel file. For instance, I downloaded an Excel template, copied and pasted my file into the template. I went to "open" in MS Project, retrieved the file and the Import Wizard Task Mapping appeared. I followed the steps and tried to match all of the fields in Excel to the fields in MS Project (example: most of the fields I marked as text, except for the title field. I marked that as 'Name'). I hit finish once I was done and the only output I received from this mapping, was the title field. I need the other 15 fields from my Excel file to show up in MS Project.  I have attached screenshots for your reference. Any help is appreciated.

Okay, probably not the answer you're looking for but the most efficient way to do what I think you want is with VBA. That's how I would do it and as a matter of fact, I already some some macros that could be adopted to your needs. I'd be happy to help you with that.

However, I'm still trying to get a handle on your needs. What exactly do you mean when you say you need to "recreate the mpp over time"? I thought you already have the template, the one you so arduously created last weekend. Are more tasks being added to the individual worksheets such that you have to periodically update the template?

Just as an aside, if the program manager has bought into Project as the application to use for scheduling, doesn't it make sense to invest in training to convert the functional managers and wean them away from Excel as a scheduling tool? I know, not your hill to climb.

Thanks for the follow-up.  Sorry for the delayed response - but for some reason, I didn't receive notification with your latest response. 

To  follow up - I'm very interested in the VBA route.  One reason - in doing more testing, I am able to generate unexpected results with the Import Wizard.  E.g., I added several dates via the merge function.  It worked.  I then tried to delete those same dates via the merge function.  It failed (the dates are still in the mpp, although they have been deleted from my spreadsheet).   I just don't seem to understand how the Import Wizard works.  All of the "examples" that I find online seem to present it as an intuitive tool - so I'm sure I'm missing some basics.

And to answer your question - yes, periodically there will - very likely - be tasks added/modified/deleted from the Task list.  So, my initial process to create a working template doesn't support maintenance.

Finally -- given the nature and number of contributors -- I don't think we will successfully convince others to adopt MS Project.

You probably didn't see my last response because this forum has been messed up the last few days. Unfortunately, that happens more than it should.

I don't quite understand how you can delete dates using the merge feature. If you delete a task in Excel, there is nothing to "merge" into Project. As far as I can tell you would need to manually delete that task in Project. If you make use of the Active field in Project, (and include it in the Excel worksheets), then you could probably use that to effectively "delete" tasks, but I've never tried that.
