Subsites - drop down menu

hi,

i'm trying to do a "simple" drop down menu in sharepoint online. i've followed this: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/configure-the-top-link-bar-for-site-navigation-1b614211-2882-4507-a791-8716090c9905?correlationid=bc8f4f07-c8a6-4cc4-880f-18f2f72bd19c&ui=en-us&rs=en-us&ad=us#_toc278883946

but not really having luck to be honest. i just need a departments heading, then a drop down with the different departments as sub sites. i.e. engineering, marketing, accounts etc. instead of there being a really long top navigation bar. i've enabled publishing and can see the "navigation" option under look and feel, but no matter which setting i change on this screen it does not activate a drop down menu? where could i be going wrong?

any help appreciated

    hi navin,

thanks for you updates. would you share screenshots of the page with the information of "it removes the drop down" and “it automatically puts all sub sites an automatic drop down”? we would like to know the situation closely first.

meanwhile, could you confirm the following about this issue?

    1. temporally create a new site and check the result? we would like to check if the issue is related to the specific site
    2. can you see the subsites in the global navigation section as following shows? could you capture a screenshot for our reference?

    Hi Spike,

thanks for replying. If I change to oslo, yes you're right it automatically puts all sub sites in an automatic drop down. Which is great, but I would still like the quick launch navigation to appear on the left hand side. If I change to seattle it removes the drop down. So question is, how do I create the drop down whilst in seattle mode?

I didn't do anything at all to get the drop down working, simply changed the theme to oslo, which does it for me.

    Many Thanks,

    Hi SysWiz,

If we choose the Oslo site layout, it will moves the Quick Launch navigation to the top of the site and removes the navigation in the left side.

If the drop-down menu still can’t be seen when you switch back to Seattle, could you provide the following information?

    1. The detailed steps you used to create drop-down menu. Some screenshots would be appreciated.
    2. A screenshot of the page you have seen.

Please post back if you have any updates.

    Regards,

    Spike

a little bit of progress on this. The drop down automatically appears if I change the layout to "oslo" under look and feel. But this obviously removes the quick launch menu from the left hand side. I still need this to be visible..
