Mapping a drive and default apps

Hi,

A couple more questions about my install of 2016 Pro-Plus and Onedrive

I have a group policy that installs 2016 Pro-plus with an Exclude-App on Groove and prevents use of Onedrive in Windows Components. This is for hot desk users and prevents huge file syncs when they swap desk, but still allows them to open their Onedrive For Business account online. If possible what I would like to finish this off is a GPO to map a drive to the online file location so that they can browse files from Explorer.

The second question is when I browse files online the default option is to load with the Office Online app, is there a way to make it default to the installed app (yes I know you can right click and select it but being default would be preferable)

Thanks

Baz

    hi baz,

we've communicated with the related engineers for your situation. currently, of the issue that we cannot open documents in client applications by default in the new onedrive for business interface, the product team is already aware and is working on a fix. we'll update here when the fix is deployed.

the following workarounds are for your reference:

    1. click ... next to the document > open in word.
    2. after opening the document in the browser by clicking on the document name, click edit document > edit in word at the up-right corner.
    3. return to classic onedrive. admins can also temporarily switch back to the classic onedrive for business experience for the users at sharepoint admin center > settings > onedrive for business experience > classic experience

    Hi Baz,

Yes, we can change the server default to open in client application in SharePoint Online. To do it, follow the steps below:

    1. Click the Gear on the site page -> Site settings.
    2. Select Site collection features in the Site Collection Administration section. (if you are not in the top level site settings page, please click Go to top level site settings.)
    3. Activate the Open Documents in Client Applications by Default feature.

Regarding the setting not work in OneDrive for Business new experience issue, we’d like to collect your tenant information to escalate the case to our related team. To protect your privacy, I have sent you a private message. Please access it via the link below:

I also notice that the setting only applies to the classic view, once you revert to the new experience it defaults to the online app again.

    Hi Ran,

Thanks for the help, on point 2 can I ask another question.

I have found the setting as per your guide thank you but I notice that the default setting is to use the server settings.

Is it possible to change the server default to open in client application in SharePoint Online? I have found numerous guides how to change it for 2010 and 2013 on premise but not online. At the bottom of this link https://bcplanning-public.sharepoint.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=265 is some PowerShell code that looks like it might do the job but I'm no expert at the shell and I don't know if that applies to online or not.

    Thanks in advance

    Baz

    Hi Baz,

    1. For how to configure mapped network drives that connect to SharePoint Online sites in Office 365 you can refer to the following KB.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2616712

For how to achieve it through Group Policy, I would suggest you post in our Group Policy forum which is a specific support channel for the Group Policy related questions. Thanks for your understanding.

The following thread is for your reference:

How can I Map Network Drive thru Group Policy

    1. Yes, you can follow the steps below:

    1)   Go to the site you want to configure this setting. For example, OneDrive for Business.

    2)   Click Return to classic OneDrive if you are in the OneDrive new browser experience.

    3)   Select the Library tab. (If you don’t see it, click the gear on the page -> Show Ribbon)

    4)   Select the Library Settings -> Advanced Settings.

    5)   Check Open in the client application option in the Opening Documents in the Browser section.

    Thanks,

    Ran
