Cannot edit shared file in Word

Recently I have received a link from friend of mine to a .doc file stored on his OneDrive4Business.

Unlike other documents where I can choose to edit the file in Word this one gives me only chance to edit it in browser. I have O365 E3 plan, Word installed on my computer, I can edit the file online (the other user allowed to make changes) and I have no problems with other files.

Can someone help me to identify what may be the problem? Thanks, Petr

hi petr,

to narrow down this issue, i'd like to confirm whether your friend sent a guest link of the document to you.

if so, the document can only be edit in browser as below. if you want to edit the document using the word client, let your friend share the document again with edit permission(don't use the get a link when sharing).

if not, to clarify the situation, i'd like to confirm the following:

  1. check if your friend could edit the document using the word client.
  2. check if you could download the document. if so, you may download it and edit it in word.
  3. check if you could edit other documents or files your friend shared with you using the office clients.
  4. please share a screenshot of the symptom.

note: to upload screenshots, you can click use rich formatting in the forum and then click the icon of insert/edit media.

if there is any feedback, please let us know.

thanks,

felix

Thank you Felix, this answered my question. He shared the link using Get a link option. Was not aware (and still do not get it) why customers have to log in to either Microsoft or O365 account to have a chance to edit the file in Word (while having Word installed on the comp...) Petr
