the sync icon is missing from the document library webpart on what i suspect are new sites/document libraries. this is what it used to look like:

but this is how a new document library looks:

why is it missing and how can we add it back? btw - if you bring up the document library ribbon, the sync icon is there so we have a workaround.

BTW - I've stopped getting email notifications when a new post is made here. That's why I didn't spot your reply. Once upon a time, these communities used to send multiple notifications about a new post which was a tidge annoying but at least I knew there was a reply. Where should I follow-up that issue? Thanks, Rob.

Thanks for the solution posted above which indeed does return the "Sync" button to the toolbar as well as the search box which we hadn't spotted was also missing.

One follow-up question - why have are new libraries been created with this option turned off? Is there a template or some master setting that's been changed that's effecting the creation of this new web part on new sites?

    hi rob,

thanks for the information. we find that the missing sync button you showed us is a web part under the site home page.  to fix the problem, we can edit the page > edit the affected web part > make sure you choose the view as all document and display search box.

    Hi Rob,

To investigate the problem, can you provide the information below?

    1. Is the affected library a OneDrive for Business library? If so, is it your own OneDrive for Business library?
    2. Do other users who has the edit permission to the affected library also encounter the same experience?
    3. The URLs of the affected library. (The one that doesn’t have a sync button and the one that has the sync button.). I’ve sent you a private message to collect it. Please access the private message via the link below:

Note how the "More" menu is missing as well.
