I cannot change or rename the name of sheets in excel for mac. I use El Capitan OS.

I’d like to confirm if you are referring to the desktop version of Excel or online version. If it is the desktop version, I suggest you post in Office for Mac forumfor professional help.
Meanwhile, I’d like to share with you some information. A worksheet that uses data from a .csv or .txt file cannot be renamed because the file name of the source file contains one or more invalid characters. You can change the file name to change the name of the sheet.
