When you created the style, did you choose "New documents based on the [whatever] template"? Also, presumably the keyboard shortcuts were stored in the Normal template, so they would be available globally.
How to highlight while typing
is there any way to type and highlight at the same time without using the mouse. I used ctrl+alt+H but all it did was to take or show me where the highlight icon was. thanks

Go to File > Options > Customize Ribbon and click the Keyboard shortcut Customize button in the bottom left corner.
In the Customize Keyboard dialog, click Styles in the Categories list, and then click the name you assigned to your style in the Styles list.
Click in the "Press new shortcut key" box and press the shortcut combination you want to use to start highlighting, make sure that Normal.dotm is selected in the "Save changes in" box, and click the Assign button.
Now click the Default Paragraph Font style in the Styles list. In the "Press new shortcut key" box, press the shortcut combination you want to use to stop highlighting. Click the Assign button and then click the Close button.
When you exit from Word, if you're prompted to save changes to Normal.dotm, click Yes.

2018-03-16T18:11:01+00:00 Thank you very much. that is what I wanted.
however, if I open a new document the highlight does not work. I have to do all the steps again, is that supposed to happen? and something else, once highlighted it will remain like that even if I use the highlight button to take out the color? is there any way of take the highlight out.
the reason I need this is because I am making correction but they are not permanent. I just need to be able to identify the corrections easily. bold, is an option but there are some parts that are originally bold so it could be more difficult for me.
