Excel calculating exponential of negative number

Using Excel 2010 I get (-8)^(1/3)=-2 but cannot calculate (-8)^(2/3)

The later returns #NUM! while mathematically I see it as (-8)^(1/3)^(2)=4 or (-8)^2^(1/3)=4

Can someone give me some insight?
