How to Decrease or Increase Header Space in Word 2016

Hello -

When I type the first sentence in Microsoft Word 2016, Windows 10, the sentence appears a specified distance down from the top of the page.  I call that the Header.

How can I adjust that distance?

Thanks,

Jerry

Use the Set as Default button at the bottom left of the Page Setup dialog.

    Hello Doug –

    I have two topics.

    1. When I received the email for your response, the Reply option did not work.  So, through some trail and errors, I found your post reply.

My question is, how can I find my posts?

          2. Your reply gave me the answer.  Using the Margin option under Layout, I                  could adjust the space I was trying to adjust.  Now, my question is, how can I            make my new margin adjustments a default setting?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

There are two things that can affect where the text starts:

    1. The top margin
    2. The space taken up by the header.

By default, the header will be located 0.5" from the top of the page, and that distance can be altered via the Layout tab of the Page Setup dialog - changing the setting for From edge for the Header.

Then, there is also the space taken up by the content of the header itself.  If the header is empty, but it still takes up more space than is available in the top margin, the empty paragraph that it contains may have a space before or after setting that is controlling the position of the effective top margin.
