Excel Solver Issue

I use solver for a number of my courses in University and I can't stand this issue anymore.

Every when I use Excel Solver on my Mac, another excel file (that i once used solver in), opens up showing a blank white page. This blank white page doesn't affect the functionality of Solver and I can still input the necessary fields if I just drag the blank excel one side. I really don't appreciate having my screen real-estate being taken up by a blank page and I can only close it if I close the solver window. What's worse, sometimes it completely hangs my excel.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of this?

    Hi Brain,

For this issue, we have reported it to the related team. Once there is any update, we'll get back to you. To benefit other community members who have the same issue, I'd like to share a summary.

    Symptom:

When using Solver on Excel 2016 for Mac, the previously created workbook (the solver was used on that workbook)will open. Solver can work on the newly created workbook and the old workbook can't be closed or modified.

    Workaround:

Quit Excel 2016 for Mac and restart it.

    Assessment:

Our related team is investigating it.

    Regards,

    Felix

    Hi Brian,

Do you have custom add-ins installed? To check, in Excel click Insert>Add-ins>My Add-ins...

Meanwhile, in Excel, go to the Excel menu and choose About Excel, confirm the version and build.

    Thanks,

    Neha

Hi Neha, thanks for the quick response! I don't have custom add-ins installed. I'd like to also mention that the blank file that opens with Solver is random, yesterday was a file called "CasinoHotel" while today, the random file that opens is "F1NightCityRace (Version 1) [Autosaved]"

and at some point in time, after closing the Solver window, I can't close the blank file because it's unresponsive.

I hope you could assist in getting rid of this issue soon!

    Thanks, Brian

    Hi Brian,

Let try using safe boot, see if the issue persists. To do this, please start with the following steps:

    1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The white Apple logo appears on your display.
    2. Release the shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder.

Once you have started your system in safe mode, test in Excel, see if you still get the same problem.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

Also, try creating a new user. Here’s an article with the detailed steps. The new user's system does not have anything added and Excel runs from scratch.
