Problem with file conversion

When I save a document in word it saves it as a file conversion document and asks me to select the encoding that makes your document readable. How do I get my files and photos  back and prevent this from happening again? Thanks for your help.

    You need to repair these file associations so that .pdf, .jpg, .png, etc. are not associated with Word. Right-click on any file of a given type, click Open with..., and select the desired application, making sure the box for "Always use this app" is checked. Repeat for the other file types.
