Error messages when saving file to SharePoint Online

We have a set of users that frequently get error messages when saving from MS Word to a SharePoint Online document library.  Had this happen recently.  User received two error messages, "Autosave Failed" and "Upload Failed".

User had accessed the document from a Sync'd local folder.  There is one other user that has been editing this document as well.  When this user tried Save As, SharePoint would not allow him to save to the SharePoint folder.  He had to save to local desktop and copy file to SharePoint library.

This is causing confusion among users that are trying to edit the same document because different versions (or copies) are having to be saved to SP.

    Hi Doug,

Thanks for your detailed explanation and screenshots.

Seems Word co-authoring takes no effect causing this issue. You could follow the steps below to delete cache files to check if it helps:

1.To open the Office Upload Center, do one of the following, depending on your version of Windows:

    • In Windows 10, click the Windows button, type Microsoft Upload Center in the Search box, and then double-click the Microsoft Upload Center app in the search results (it may say 2010 or 2013, depending on your Office version).

2.In the Upload Center, click Settings, and then click Delete Cached Files.

For more details, please refer to Delete your Office Document Cache.

In the meantime, please check if the document is checked outon one of the users' ends.

If the issue persists, I would like to confirm the following information to narrow down this issue:

1.Does the issue only occur in the specific document? How about other documents in the library?

2.Please share both users' Word version (Word >File >Account) and OneDrive version (Click OneDrive icon >Settings >About) with us to try reproducing this issue on our end.

    Regards,

    Eli

    Hi Doug,

May I know if you clear Upload Center and check the status of the file?

    Regards,

    Eli

    Eli:

The user has been on travel so been unable to work with them directly.  But he has run into other issues trying to get items sync'd, one while working offline yesterday.  Below are screen shots of the email he sent me yesterday:

    Hi Doug,

Sorry for the delay respond as I'm on my weekend.

Considering the issue is most likely related to co-authoring, we suggest your use check the following points mentioned in

Troubleshoot co-authoring in Office to see if it make helps.

If the issue persists, could you help confirm the following information to narrow down this issue:

1.Does the issue only occur in the specific document? How about other documents in the library?
