I do not intentionally use a same sheet reference. I create the formula by clicking cells - first on a cell on another sheet and then on a cell local to the formula cell:
- select cell
- type =
- go to another sheet and select a cell with a value
- go back to the original sheet and select a cell with a value - this becomes a same sheet reference.
