Removing shading from bullet points

I'm working on a document and using numbered bullets.

When I go into the tabbed bullet (i.e. 1.6.1), a shaded background is automatically added, which I do not need.

How do I turn the shading off please?

The shading only appears when you click on the numbering.  If you click elsewhere in the document, it will not be visible.

Thank you for the swift reply, however, I clicked elsewhere and the shading remained.

I am continuing to explore my options.

    Hi Taylor,

Thanks for posting in the community, I’m glad to offer help.

According to the screenshot you provided, you seemed to accidentally shade the bullets. To remove it, you can click on the bullets to select them, and then click “Character Shading” icon on the Home tab to see if it can solve the problem.

Please feel free to let us know if it works, I’ll continue to help you if there is any progress.

    Best Regards,

    Arck

Click a number to select them all and press + Shift+Z. Does that remove the shading?

If the shortcut doesn't do it, there is a macro you could try (originally created by Doug Robbins). I don't know if the macro has been tested in Word for Mac, though.

Just a guess because it typically doesn't have an effect on Bullets & Numbers but it's worth a try: Have a look in Word> Preferences> View to see what is indicated for Field Shading... Choose something other than Always.
