fixing table width

I use tables a lot, and want each one to be exactly 18cm wide, the first column exactly 1.1cm wide the the other columns variable. But as soon as I am working in the variable columns, it changes the width of the first one and the width of the whole table! It is so frustrating that the widths I want fixed are 'preferred', not 'fixed'. Can MS not please write an update to fix this? I am working in Word 2016, but my work colleague is using 365 and has the same issue.

    Hi Lyn

I have tried all your above suggestions numerous times, but the 18cm and the 1cm columns still adjust slightly if I manually resize other columns (ie pull their left or right borders across to fit contents or pictures). Until MS changes that Preferred width to Fixed width I think this is a serious bug in Word.

You are right, Sally. I apologise I can't do much to help you solve the issue.

As for now, it would be best to leave a new suggestion or vote on existing suggestions about this fixed preferred column width.

The more votes this suggestion receives, the more responsive Microsoft would be in improving the feature.
