Thank you for the screenshot. Your installation of Excel is right up to date!
There are very few features in Excel for Windows that haven't made it to the Mac. The one most people come across is Active-X.
George suggested you attempt to open the file on the free 0nline version of Excel at OneDrive.com or SharePoint if you have it. I am almost certain you will get a similar message explaining that certain features are not supported. Again, Active-X controls are the main problem, but there could be some other rarely used feature that's triggering the compatibility issue.
