SharePoint - Folder in user error

Hello,

I sync a folder in SharePoint to my file explorer but when I try to open a file inside of that folder it gives me below error:

The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program.

I closed everything, stop sync, and re-sync the folder again but the error still continues. The file doesn't have password protection.

Could you please help me with this issue?

How can I solve it?

Thank you

    Hi Nesil,

I would like confirm whether you open this Word document from File Explorer. If yes, we suggest you go to SharePoint site, open this file in browser and click “Open in App” button to check the result.

Moreover, seems like only one documents has this issue, can you please provide the screenshot of this error and your Word version? (Word-> File-> Account-> Product Information and take a capture.)

    Regards,

    Ivy

    hi Ivy,

I tried to open it from SharePoint online and it worked, the file is opening, but when I try to open it again from file explorer it gives the same error.

This is not only one file, but it also happens to different files in different folders.

    Below are the screenshots.

    Thank you

    hi Ivy,

Might this be related to the character limit? The total character of the folders (including SharePoint name) is 222 and the file character is 41. I can open other files that have a shorter name inside of the same folder.

    Thanks

    Hi Nesli,

Sorry for the late response. I’m following up with you on this thread.

Yes, your assumption is correct. The issue is related to the file path character limit. The maximum path length limit is 260 characters. In your case, the characters are more than 260, so the issue occurs. Please try to rename the file or shorten the folder path to see if the issue can be resolved.

For more related information, you may refer to Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces.

    Thanks,

    Ray

Thank you so much for the response Ray.

There is a solution for long path names and this can solve our problems.

It says in that link that we need to update application manifest. Could you please help me to find where I can find this application manifest xml?

    Thank you
