Use characters A to Z and _ in names and your are on the safe side.
You can use numbers 0 to 9 also, but you can not define a name that is equal to a cell reference in absolute and R1C1 reference style.

I was trying to create a named range with the name that includes '&' character in it , excel doesn't allow me to create one and pops up a waring box indicating the syntax isn't correct along with 3 rules to verify the name specifying not to include spaces or characters that isn't allowed . I could not find any page by microsoft that specifies that characters that are not allowed while naming a named manager . I kindly request the microsoft community to specify the rules for naming the named ranges in excel.
