I am trying to create a Macro in Word (Office 365).

After taking these steps:

  • open blank document
  • select: View - Macros - View Macros
  • enter: Macro name: EditingLevel
  • enter: Macros in: Normal.dotm (global template)
  • select: Create

I get this error message:

Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications

! Out of memory

Would appreciate any advice the community can give me. Many thanks.

ps I have just noticed that the error message does not come up when I select Macros in: Document 1

Thank you Sukie. Is there someone on this thread able to assist please? I am still experiencing the same error despite having reinstalled Word etc.

The Help button in the error message directs me to the following page, please see my responses in red to the suggestions there. Appreciate any assistance anyone can offer me, I need to run Macros for my work & am currently unable to do so.

More memory was required than is available, or a 64K segment boundary was encountered. This error has the following causes and solutions:

    • You have too many applications, documents, or source files open. Close any unnecessary applications, documents, or source files that are open. I only had one Word doc open.
    • You have a module or procedure that's too large. Break large modules or procedures into smaller ones. This doesn't save memory, but it can prevent hitting 64K segment boundaries. I don't think I have any modules or procedures... how do I check this?
    • You are running Microsoft Windows in standard mode. Restart Microsoft Windows in enhanced mode. How do I restart in enhanced mode and what does this mean for usual operations of PC?
    • You are running Microsoft Windows in enhanced mode, but have run out of virtual memory. Increase virtual memory by freeing some disk space, or at least ensure that some space is available I have 258GB of disk space available.
    • You have terminate-and-stay-resident programs running. Eliminate terminate-and-stay-resident programs. Um, no idea what this means...
    • You have many device drivers loaded. Eliminate unnecessary device drivers. I doubt this as this is a new computer & I haven't really installed much beyond the basics, however, how would I check for this?
    • You have run out of space for Public variables. Reduce the number of Public variables. Not sure what this means or how to check for it?
    • You have attempted to update a property that is read-only. Do not assign values to read-only properties. I haven't really attempted anything other than to start the process of creating a new Macro, so I doubt that this is the issue...?
