Alt F4 is for the whole application

CTL F4 is for the current file only.

That's version dependent. In newer versions, as I mentioned, Excel opens a separate copy of the application for each file. In that case, if you have multiple workbooks open, you have multiple applications open. So Alt+F4 = Ctrl+F4 in the later versions of Excel.

    True,

Every time you open another workbook Excel places a different instance of the Toolbar and QAT on the screen as of 2013. Prior to that one menu displayed regardless of the number of workbooks that were open.

Why Microsoft chose to use Alt+F4 and Ctrl+F4 identically remains a mystery. Why there is no Exit command on the File menu remains a mystery. In early versions of Excel if you held down the Shift key when you opened a menu, additional choices were displayed, for example, the File menu had a Close All option.

Nevertheless, the QAT option is a fast and easy solution.

Close all open workbooks by clicking the close button in the upper right corner, or by selecting File > Close, or by pressing Alt+F4.

When you close the last workbook, Excel will close.

    There is mine:

<ALT><F4> will exit, prompting to save changes if necessary.

You can also click on the "X" button in upper right corner of application window

You could add the Exit Excel command to the QAT (quick access toolbar). I like this option because it closes all Excel applications that are open.

Depending on your version of Excel Alt+F4.

Since Excel opens a different copy of the application for each file, you can close the current file application from the File menu with File, Close.

Also you can click the top left corner of Excel and from the drop down choose Close.

Or the Close button in the top right corner.

The Exit command has been removed from the File menu is the latest versions of Excel. (This is a mistake in my opinion.
