The sheet tabs setting is in Excel Preferences on the Mac. Use the Menu Bar, select Excel and then Preferences > View.

Can you please check whether "Show sheet tabs" setting is turned off by default in MAC?

For all Excel versions, click File > Options > Advanced—in under Display options for this workbook—and then ensure that there is a check in the Show sheet tabs box.

Also On the Home tab, click Format > under Visibility > Hide & Unhide > Hide Sheet.
If you are expecting anything specific to MAC, please raise a request to apple support.

    Thank you!

With all due respect for my friend Jim I don't understand how his reply answers the question you asked. It simply corrects the misinformation served up by Ravikumar Vadamalai but that Preference determines whether all sheet tabs are displayed or not. It provides no list of any kind whatsoever. Further, when that Preference is not checked the feature I detailed for you is rendered inoperable as are other methods of navigating from one sheet to another... Including the ability you want to avoid : scrolling the sheet tabs

For the benefit of those who may refer to this thread please explain how that reply addresses the question you posed.

I overlooked the Navigation tool on the View tab which displays a list of the sheet names & can be used to select the desired sheet. The pane can be dragged by its title bar to be a floating pane & the width of the pane can be adjusted.
