Excel Data Types Not Working

Data Types are currently not working as expected for all users of Microsoft Excel. The work-around I recommend is to revert to version 16.64.

If you are affected and haven't already done so, please take a moment to notify Microsoft that you are affected by this problem. The way to do it is to use the Menu Bar and choose Help > Feedback > I Don't Like Something. Microsoft uses the Squeaky Wheel method to prioritize bug fixes. The more reports, the higher up the priority list the bug gets. Please do this from the current update of Excel before reverting to 16.64.

To revert to version 16.64:

Use the Menu Bar and choose Help > Check for Updates to launch AutoUpdate

In AutoUpdate, set updates to Manual to prevent AutoUpdate from automatically updating after you revert to the older build.

In Finder, navigate to the Applications folder

Right-click on Microsoft Excel.app and choose Move to Trash

Restart your Mac

Empty the Mac OS Trash

Use this installer to install build 16.64 of Microsoft Excel: Excel

Some users may be able to find a work-around, which is why I am posting this discussion. Some users will be blocked from this due to licensing or IT department restrictions.

There are third-party solutions available. I don't know which ones are great and which ones are less good. I'm hoping people will try them out and reply here with their results and recommendations.

On the Insert tab of the Ribbon choose Add-ins > Get Add-ins.

In the resulting dialog enter the word Stock in the Search field then click the spyglass icon. There are a lot of add-ins available. Let's chat about them in this thread.

As the Mac App Store does not provide a way to roll an app back, I uninstalled all apps and removed Containers and rebooted, as per Jim's earlier comments.

Installed 16.67 package (as per the URL in Jim's comments) and surprise, "STOCK Data" works again.

Can't tell what is messed up between 16.67 and 16.68, but I hope MS is paying attention.

Had to disable the MS Auto updater as it keeps wanting to update apps.

Hope this help some of you stuck on this thread.

Also thanks Earl. You comment drive me to trying again.

I've had Ventura 13.01 and now 13.1 with the latest Excel versions, and I have experienced the problem. So it's not the Mac OS X version. What's more is my experience has been that immediately following the Venture 13.1 upgrade, for a brief moment, Excel Stock data types worked. As in it worked on the first time I used data types: I typed in MSFT, selected Stock data type, entered ={cell}.Price in a cell to test, and that all worked. I quit Excel, re-opened Excel, and got the same error message to sign out of my account, and has never worked since.

In all the installs/reinstalls/deinstalls of Excel on my “problem” MacBook, I did once see the same behavior—opening a sheet with Stock data cells initially worked (I.e. the Stock data refreshed), but then suddenly didn’t in that same sheet.

A data point: On my "immune" Mac with Ventura 13.1, Excel 16.68 works fine with Stock data.

I posted to soon. After quitting Excel and starting again, the problem returned.

I am ready to tear my hair about, but I am already bald.

Come on MS undo what ever you did.

It does not matter what MacOS version or Excel version or source of Office install.

To be clear, were you ever at 16.64? I suspect a full Office wipe, then 16.64 is needed.

As I wrote earlier, I, too, thought a miracle had occurred and 16.67 worked on my "problem" Mac. Then, it didn't work. So, I'm back to 16.64.
