problem creating interactive outline using headings

I have a problem creating interactive outlines using headings;

I can make headings using styles, but they do not appear in the headings side bar;

but sample docs do have them;

edit:

I find the problem relates to pasted text;

what are the format rules that define a heading?

highlighting a line of pasted text and changing the style to Heading1 is not recognised as a heading, but typing the same line of text and changing the style is;

thanks

Instead of selecting a sentence, just click inside the text. That should prevent Word from trying to access formatting to only the selected range.

If you have a chance to look at the document in a full version of Word (for PC or Mac), I would recommend that you do so, to get more information.

    It appears that the problem of linked styles extends to the Android version.

    As Stefan said, click in the text without selecting anything to apply the style as a paragraph style.

    Headings that do not show up in the Navigation Pane or in a Table of Contents (or in Cross-References / Hyperlinks)

    hi Stefan,

    thank you, that's the solution;

    just one click rather than selecting the sentence;

    and many thanks to everyone above for their inputs;

    thank you Stefan, that is helpful;

    I cannot see the formatting marks in android, but I selected all, and cleared the formatting; then selected the pasted sentence; applied Heading 1; the style of the sentence was clearly changed, But nothing was added to the interactive outline side bar;

    the same sentence written below the pasted version, following the same process, is added automatically to the interactive outline bar;

    so if I copy and paste a 40 page document into Word, I am unable to create what is essentially an index;

    puzzling;

    thanks

    Generally, to apply a heading style to text, either select the whole text paragraph or just move the insertion point into the text paragraph and then apply the style.

    On a PC or Mac, you can tell exactly what is a paragraph, because it is terminated by a paragraph mark (¶) which is shown when you display nonprinting marks. The sample below shows a document with two text paragraphs. The style gallery on the Home tab can be used to apply heading styles (or other styles).
