in EXCEL, "data - from web" retrieve from https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard doesnt work, but works in Power BI

Hello, Im trying to retrieve data in EXCEL via "data - from web" option from https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard site, but I do get this error:

"Error: The remote server return an HTTP status code '404' when trying to access 'https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard"

I do the same operation in PowerBI and I do get several tables that I can import.

**Couple of observations:**1) I already tried in a personal computer in excel, same error. Suggest you also try yourself, have you tried in your excel in your personal computer?
2) The "web" tab displayed during the "site refresh" process in the EXCEL power query shows a message that says: "this browser isn't supported anymore". Does Microsoft need to update something on the Query code of Excel? Because power BI does work and technically "Data - get data from web" is the same functionality in both excel or power BI.
3) This clearly isnt a ESPN website or security issue because:

  • It worked in excel before, now it doesn't AND
  • As said above, it works in PowerBI, but doesn't in Excel.

Why does it work in PowerBI, but doesn't work in Excel? Did the power Query functionality in EXCEL break?

Thanks a lot!

I guess something might have changed in excel web data functionality? because this wasn't a problem a few months back.

Can I somehow raise a ticket so the get data from web functionality in excel works the same way as power BI?

Base on the infomation from my colleague, the get dat from web in excel is base on IE and the PBI get the Web.browsercontents is based on the chromium or edge webview2 control. So if you want to use it in excel, you can get data from PBI and then use PBI data flow as excel data source.

you should see tables coming up in PowerBI, but they dont come in excel.

My post was about loading the website without "/" at the end. I get the error I mentioned in excel:

"Error: The remote server return an HTTP status code '404' when trying to access 'https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard"

That error doesnt happen in PowerBI though.

You dont get the error, but your results in PowerBI would be different than in Excel.
