Seach box is not showing in the SharePoint online after migrating from on premsis

Can we solution mentioned in below link? IF yes is there any relavent MS article on this? Please help

Hi @sns ,

Did you use SharePoint Migration Tool(SPMT) to deploy the migration? If you migrated the page with SPMT, It is a normal situation. As said here: SPMT supported SharePoint web parts, Search Box web part is not supported to migrate.

Yes. it is done with SPMT, so what is the solution in that case to get the search option in the online?
Please tell me sequence of steps to be followed to achieve the search functionality in the online?

Does solution works mentioned in the blog I have mentioned in my previous thread?

My bad. I have misunderstanding on the supported web part in my above answer. If you migrate the on-prem site to a SharePoint Online modern site, the search box web part will not be supported to migrate. However if you migrate to a SharePoint Online classic site, the search box web pary will be migrated successfully as search box web part is only supported in a SharePoint Online classic site now. We have no way to get a classic search box web part in a SharePoint modern site even if you select return to classic experience.

You have to create a classic team site in SharePoint Online and migrate the on-prem site to the SharePoint Online classic site using SPMT. Then the search box will be migrated successfully and you will get search experience there.

Hi Allen Xu,

PFA shows search box present in on premisis and after migrating to online it does not show.
so why it is happening, we have created destination sharepoint online site collection as communication site, is it because of that search box is not showing up? is it same case with when choose team site also?
so as per your suggestion only classic teams sites will give search functionality?
Please help further.

Yes, the search box is not showing up beacuse that the destination site in SharePoint Online is a communication site. A communication site is using modern experience so you cannot get the search box web part after migration.

On a classic page(the migrated page in SharePoint Online is a classic page), if you want to achieve search functionality on that migrated page, yes, only way is to migrate that page to a classic team site.

I don't think the blog will give a help. It is for a modern page not a classic page. Anyway I will have a try to the method in that blog and update the test result here then.

Please share me any Microsoft article saying classic team site will support search functionality post migration.

and one more thing so what we need to do in case of communication and team site modern templates to make search functions?

About configuring the Search Box Web Part

In modern site,there is a OOB search box on the top of all modern pages. You don't need to add it manually.

After migrated to communication site, it is modern right? but i am not seeing search box like you are seeing it

Yes, a communication site is a modern site. You can't see it because the migrated pages are classic pages, and the search box can only be seen on modern pages. You still can't see it on classic pages even if you are in a modern site. And we have no way to achieve search functionality on a classic page of a modern site.

Okay. As you instructed in one your previous thread, while creating the site I have chosen option other option and selected classic option. Then I migrated on premises site collection to this newly created classic site in SharePoint online, but search bar is not showing up. Please suggest further.

so now , how we need to do achieve search functionality to online post migration from on premises?
and one more question is classic page and classic site both are different?

You can edit the page and add a search box web part on the page.

We can add a classic page in a SharePoint Online modern site but a few web parts like search box, script editor and so on can not be achieved on a classic page in a SharePoint Online modern site.

In a classic site, we can only add classic pages and cannot add any modern page. But web parts like search box, script editor and so on can be achieved on all pages in a classic site.

You want to achieve search functionality on your migrated pages or on newly created modern pages? If you want to achieve search functionality on your migrated pages, it is impossible because they are classic pages and search box cannot be added to classic pages in a modern site.
