Recently whenever I try to edit an embedded Excel chart in PowerPoint, I get a message shown in the attached screenshot. I am using Office 365 for Business and the files are stored on OneDrive. I have the latest updates installed.

Request assistance to resolve this issue.

    Save here, on a mac.

Happens only when the excel that is holding the chart pasted is stored in OneDrive. If it's saved to any local folder the file is opened.

Microsoft, this needs a proper fix ASAP

    Dear Ronald and Ido,

Could you provide the version number of the Excel for Mac application, the PowerPoint for Mac application and the Mac operating system for our confirmation?

Are you using the Paste Special way to link and embed the Excel chart?

Do all files are synced with the OneDrive sync client for Mac?

Welcome to share your updates at your convenience.

Thanks for your effort and time.

    Sincerely

    Dear Cliff,

Thank you for your response. I am using Windows 10 and my answers are shown below:

    Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2310 Build 16.0.16924.20054) 64-bit

    Microsoft® PowerPoint® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2310 Build 16.0.16924.20054) 64-bit

Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H1, OS build 19043.2364 , Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4190.0

Using the Paste Special way to embed the Excel chart keeping source formatting

All files are synced with the OneDrive sync client for Windows. OneDrive version: Build 23.209.1008.0002 (64-bit)

    Kind regards,

    Ronald

    Thanks for the reply Cliff.

    Am using:

    • Microsoft® PowerPoint for Mac Version 16.78.3 (23102801)
    • Microsoft® Excel for Mac Version 16.78.3 (23102801)
    • Mac OS Sonoma 14.1

There's no paste special and embed on Mac (as there's not OLE framework).

Opening the XML within the PowerPoint package the chart origin is saved as a link to SharePoint.

    More info:

    1. As stated, before this happens only when the excel file is saved to OneDrive. when it is saved to any other folder on the system functionality is OK ("edit data in excel" invokes the proper file).
    2. If the excel file is open but in the background, "edit data in excel" brings it to front, meaning the file is linked properly, there's probably a problem with the link parsing if excel is shutdown
    3. Tried removing the OneDrive client. Copy and pasted the chart in the web versions of PP and excel. when opened locally there is still the same error

Can assist in further investigating this matter

    eagerly awaiting a solution,

    Ido

Try repeating the same process but with the PowerPoint and Excel files saved to your local hard drive.

PowerPoint doesn't seem able to handle linking to OneDrive/SharePoint properly.
