Problem with Insert Object in Word

When I try to insert an object in Word 365 I click on Object and a dialog box opens for me to choose the file. I have a spinning icon and cannot select anything.

    Thanks for the update. Your description suggests that Word is slow to respond but doesn't actually freeze or crash.

    If you save, close and re-open the document, do you see the same happening again, or are you able to access the embedded document as expected?
