Locked PC

I have a work account (I am the admin) and was setting up a new laptop for one of my employees but during setup, an error occurred that forced me to skip the password/pin portion. Then when the laptop was restarted after an update, it locked and has no password/pin to unlock it.

I can't access the Microsoft365 account for the user because she set up MFA on her own Authenticator App that I can't access and she can no longer access. Is there a workaround to gain access to the account since it is my company's account? I can't seem to find a way through so that I can get the recovery key.

    Hi Yousef Kassis

    Good day!

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community, we are glad to assist you here.

Based on your description, I understand your need to regain the access to one employee's account due to the loss of MFA credentials. In this case, as the admin of your company, you may have to reset the account's authentication method under "Manage MFA authentication methods."

    Kindly follow below steps:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as at least an Authentication Administrator.
    2. Browse to Identity > Users > All users.
    3. Choose the user you wish to perform an action on and select Authentication methods. At the top of the window, then choose one of the following options for the user:
      • Reset password resets the user's password and assigns a temporary password that must be changed on the next sign-in.
      • Require re-register MFA deactivates the user's hardware OATH tokens and deletes the following authentication methods from this user: phone numbers, Microsoft Authenticator apps and software OATH tokens. If needed, the user is requested to set up a new MFA authentication method the next time they sign in.
      • Revoke MFA sessions clears the user's remembered MFA sessions and requires them to perform MFA the next time it's required by the policy on the device.

For more information, please refer to this document: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multi-factor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID | Learn from Microsoft.

Your precious time and your understanding would be highly appreciated. Have a nice day!

    Best regards,

    Connery You
