Kia Ora team,

I have one of the excel file from company account. Just from today, when I use the excel application from my computer to open this file, it showed one version 3 days ago and didn't update correctly. I closed it and it showed it was going to update the changes but never finished. I turned off the computer, update the latest update and rebooted, the file was still not updated in the excel application.

From the excel application, I can see the latest version of the file but just read-only. When I exit the latest version, it showed up the version 3 days ago and not updated it at all.

However, when I tried to access this file from a browser to share point, it showed up the latest version and I can also edit it.

Just wonder anyone can help on this case??

Kind regards

Sylvie

    Dear Sylvie,

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Per your description, I understand that you are experiencing issue with SharePoint files, when you open the file in Excel desktop application, it shows old version, not the latest version.

I'd like to help you, we can work together to narrow down the situation and work towards a resolution path.

I notice you mentioned that you can access this file from a browser to share point, it showed up the latest version and you can also edit it.

    You may try steps below:

    1. Close the Excel file. Sign out your account from Excel desktop app, quit Excel app.

Open Excel app again, sign in with your account which has permission to access the SharePoint file.

2.Go to SharePoint in browser, find your Excel file, open it in Excel Online firstly.
From upper-right corner, click Editing > Open in Desktop, as shown below. Open it in Excel desktop app again. Try editing it and check the result.

    1. You may try clearing cache files from Excel desktop app > File>Options > Save > Cache Settings > Delete cache files > click OK.

If the Excel file still shows old version when you open it in Excel desktop app, I understand how frustrating this situation can be and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Let me help you further. I would appreciate if you could share following information:

1.Does this issue happen when you open a specific Excel file or different files?

2.May I know if other users who have permission to access the same Excel file also experience this issue? I'd like to check if this issue only occurs in your Excel desktop App.

3.What is the version of your Excel desktop App? Please go to File > Account, capture a full screenshot of Product Information and share it here.

Look forward to your reply. Thanks for your time and cooperation!

Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

    Best Regards,

    Tina

    Kia Ora,

    Thanks for your reply.

I followed all your steps, but it still showed the old version in the desktop app.

1.Does this issue happen when you open a specific Excel file or different files?

--------at the moment only happened to one of the file. Other files in the sharepoint show the latest version and editable.

2.May I know if other users who have permission to access the same Excel file also experience this issue? I'd like to check if this issue only occurs in your Excel desktop App.

------------It only occurs in my account at the moment, as I am also using another user to login from another computer which shows good. This file is opened to most of the coworkers.

3.What is the version of your Excel desktop App? Please go to File > Account, capture a full screenshot of Product Information and share it here.

    ----------Please see below.

I also attached the notes showed up on the screen when I tried to close the file with "performance cleanup" which's never going to end.

    Dear Sylvie,

Thank you for posting back. I appreciate your precious time doing tests and sharing with me the test result.

Many thanks for sharing this screenshot.

I'd like to convey that recently we noticed that other users are experiencing similar issue when editing file stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, they met this same Performing cleanup window when they close their file.

Consider that different users from different tenant are experiencing this problem, I'm afraid this is a temporarily server-side issue which needs to be investigated and fixed by the back-end support team.

In this situation, I sincerely recommend you contact your Microsoft 365 Administrator, raise a support ticket by following steps in this article: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn The more reports they receive from different customers, the more likely they will be able to find something affecting users in common, do investigation and fix it soon.

Note: To create a support ticket, you need to have Microsoft 365 admin privileges, and if you're not an admin for your Microsoft 365 organization, contact the admin of creating a new ticket. Reference: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

Please accept my apologies for redirecting you to the related team support, as the moderators in this community have limited resources to verify the backend information and to get the quick and better assistance, we requested for this.

Your understanding and patience will be greatly appreciated.
