Does Microsoft Authenticator discontinue their 2 factor authentication starting August 2025?

Considering it is going to stop with their automatic passwords, I was wondering. Couldn’t find the answer online (could’ve just looked over it), except the automatic Google AI summarized result, except it 1. Isn’t trustworthy imo and 2. Does not link the correct articles, so I couldn’t find a direct straightforward answer in the sources. Thank you in advance!

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

In July the password management and autofill features in the Authenticator app will be discontinued, the 2 factor authentication (MFA) capabilities in the app will not be removed and will remain available.

Hi, Changes to Microsoft Authenticator autofill - Microsoft Support The Authenticator is a terrible idea in my opinion based on the problems it causes for users. I have not figured out what a user can do if they lose their phone! Unless of course they generated a Recovery Code at How to use two-step verification with your Microsoft account - Microsoft Support I wish that Microsoft would highlight the Generator and push users to create a Code.

In August 2025, Microsoft will discontinue the password management and autofill features within the Authenticator app. This means users will no longer be able to save new passwords, use the autofill functionality, or access previously saved passwords within the app. Instead, Microsoft is directing users to utilize Microsoft Edge for password management and autofill. Here's a breakdown of the changes:

    • July 2025: Autofill functionality within the Authenticator app will cease to work.
    • July 2025: Payment information stored in Authenticator will be deleted.
    • August 2025: All synced password data, including saved passwords, will be permanently deleted from the Authenticator app. Microsoft's decision to remove these features from Authenticator is part of a broader strategy to consolidate password management and autofill into Microsoft Edge. Users who rely on Authenticator for these features will need to migrate to Edge or another password manager. While the password management features are being removed, Microsoft Authenticator will continue to support multi-factor authentication and passkeys.
